What to Bring to the NCLB Exam
All candidates are encouraged to become familiar with the following information in preparation for taking the National Certification in Literary Braille (NCLB) examination.
Candidates are responsible to bring the following items to the test site:
- One manual braillewriter that can accommodate 11X11.5 paper and is in good working condition
- One standard 28-cell, 4-line slate and stylus
- Government issued picture ID
- One braille eraser (optional)
- Pen or pencil (optional)
- All paper will be provided by the NBPCB
- Do not bring any braille or study materials
- Do not bring any reference books or materials
- Cell phones must be turned off
- Electronic devices are not allowed in the test room (computers, cameras, etc.)
- Food and beverages are not allowed in the test room
Please note the following:
- Candidates will have a maximum of six (6) hours to complete the examination: two (2) hours for Braillewriter; one (1) hour for Slate & Stylus; two (2) hours for Proofreading; and one (1) hour for Multiple Choice
- Breaks and a one hour lunch will be scheduled, candidates are responsible to obtain their own food/beverages
- Applications will not be accepted after the registration deadline
- Applications are not complete until the NBPCB has received all fees, unless other arrangements have been approved by the NBPCB
- Any request for accommodations based on disability must be documented by a qualified professional, and be received by the NBPCB office at least thirty (30) days prior to the test date for approval
- The examination will occur in a well-lighted, appropriate location
- NBPCB approved Test Administrators proctor all examinations
- Examinations are individually evaluated and scored by a panel of qualified braille experts
Note: A braille or print copy of BANAs English Braille American Edition (EBAE), Revised 2002 will be available for candidates use during the first three sections of the exam. Use of the 2002 or 2007 rules are acceptable until 2012. In 2012, the 2007 updates will be required. Candidates must use the EBAE manual provided by the Test Administrator and may not use a personal copy during the test.
